Stream 2 | Workshop | Beyond Words: Finding ways to connect, in difficult times.
Presenter: Rachel Callander
This workshop explores the impact of language, and the power of words. Our language shapes our landscape. The words we speak influence the behaviour, attitudes, and beliefs of ourselves and others. Within high-stakes contexts, such as the sharing of difficult information, our words carry an enormous emotional weight. They can alienate and add trauma, or they can honour and empower. We have a responsibility to manage this power with care and diplomacy.

Keynote | Clare Bowditch
Presenter: Clare Bowditch
‘If you can speak, you can sing’ - a truly unique live-taught masterclass in Courage and Self-Leadership.
Clare will teach audiences to challenge their limiting stories and discuss her personal story around sibling grief, and offer insight into the struggle of not having the language or cognition to deal with acute loss at a young age.
Using stories from her own struggles and triumphs, Clare teaches us to face and name our inner critics. In doing so, we tap in to our ability to live full, amazing lives and develop our own inner champion.
Clare is one of those effortlessly mesmeric communicators. Her rare blend of insight and charisma means that people cannot help but be thoroughly engaged when she speaks. It will be a rare audience member that leaves being anything other than charmed and enlightened.

Stream 2 | Workshop | Childhood Dementia - the facts, symptoms and lived experience
Presenter: Gail Hilton
Introduction:
This workshop will explore what childhood dementia is, the symptoms children and young people experience and statistics associated with it. Through a series of videos, families share their experience and talk about what they need from the health system. The materials presented in this workshop have been developed with funding from the Federal Government and are informed by a burden study prepared by THEMA Consulting: Childhood Dementia in Australia.
Childhood dementia is an umbrella term encompassing 70+ rare and ultra-rare genetic conditions. When considered collectively these impact 1 in 2800 live births and result in more than 90 premature deaths per year in Australia. For comparison, there are 92 deaths per year in Australia from cancer in children aged 0–14 (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2020). Until recently, these 70+ conditions have been considered individually, with little recognition, research or support. Collectively addressing childhood dementia provides the opportunity for greater scale, impact and improvement of both services and therapy development.
The audience will:
Understand what childhood dementia is, its causes and symptoms;
Understand that when considered together, the disorders that cause childhood dementia cause a relatively high proportion of paediatric deaths;
Gain further insight into the progressive nature of the condition and the wide reaching impacts of dementia on children and their families;
Consider how services can more appropriately meet the needs of childhood dementia consumers.

Stream 1 | Workshop | A community development approach to paediatric palliative care
Presenter: Peter Westoby & Elham Day
This workshop aims to do three things. First, it will support participants in understanding community development principles and methods. Second, it will create spaces to explore and elicit the meaning and implications in their own context/work places.
- Enhancing community and social connectedness for families who’s children have life-limiting illness;
- Advocates for social and community inclusion and access to public facilities;
- Facilitating compassionate community conversations, which build social capacity for compassionate neighbours and supports;
- Building partnerships with families, communities and other stakeholders, to ensure the work is community and family-led.
